Decisions…Decisions

I was talking to a young lady recently who was trying to figure out what direction she wanted her life to go in for a career. She is currently studying business but felt the desire to do interior design. She was torn trying to decide what to do.

She reminded me of myself when I was deciding what to major in for college. My choices were either an elementary school art teacher or accountant. I chose to major in accounting because I thought it would make more money. She is thinking of staying in business, the more practical route, despite the fact that she loves interior design.

I told her that interior design seemed to be a great career because when I was studying fashion merchandising I had many friends who were on that tract. I quickly gave her a rundown of my journey through college studying certain things and where I am today. Although I chose accounting initially, I later went on to study fashion merchandising and then advertising and graphic design. I told her to just move forward in what she felt was in her heart to do and everything would just come together. She would get the direction that she needs after she moves forward with a decision.

AND WE KNOW THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD TO THOSE THAT LOVE GOD, TO THOSE WHO ARE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE.

As I heard myself explaining my journey. It sounded perfect. The way my college major choices blended together seemed like a storybook adventure. It didn’t seem like that when I was going through those times, though. I often questioned if I was making the right choices. Should I do this, or that? But hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes we don’t know when we are making choices if they are the best ones. Especially when we are young. We have to trust God when we are trying to make a decision that He will guide us. As in John 5:15, we have to trust that when we pray, He hears us and because we know that He hears us, we know that He will answer us. Move forward with a decision.

I heard Bishop TD Jakes talking to Steven Furtick about a conversation that he had with his youngest son about his college choice of study. Jakes’ son said to him, “What if this is not what I’m suppose to do?” Bishop Jakes told him, “Don’t worry. If it is not, it will be the thing that leads you to what you are suppose to do.” That is such an encouraging statement. God says that all things work together for good to those who love Him and are called to His purpose and will. That means after you have sought God through prayer, you can feel confident that when an opportunity comes to you, you can move forward with it. That opportunity may be the thing that shifts your life to where God wants it to go.
